Romania to Albania – Transylvania & Beyond

📅 14 Days / 13 Nights 👥 Max 12 🎂 Ages 18-70 📍 Bucharest / Sarandë 🏔 Easy–Moderate 💰 From €2140 per person

Begin in the land of Dracula and end on the Albanian Riviera. Between those two points, this 14-day Inside Balkan overland tour traverses four countries and more than a thousand years of Balkan history: Romanian Transylvania, Bulgarian monasteries and rose valleys, the deep blue of Lake Ohrid, and the Ottoman and UNESCO cities of southern Albania. It is one of the most geographically sweeping tours in the Inside Balkan portfolio and provides an extraordinary comparative overview of the Balkans’ cultural and natural diversity.

The Romania section opens with two of Europe’s most dramatic medieval landscapes: Transylvania’s castle towns of Brașov and Bran (Dracula’s castle), and the perfectly preserved Saxon city of Sibiu. Bulgaria brings the vast communist-era grandeur of Sofia and the UNESCO serenity of Rila Monastery. North Macedonia offers UNESCO Lake Ohrid and the Roman ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis. And Albania — always the deepest section of any Inside Balkan tour — provides the Stone Cities of Berat and Gjirokastër, the Blue Eye spring, the Ksamil beaches, and the ancient ruins of Butrint.

Fourteen days and four countries is a significant investment of time and money. Inside Balkan designed this tour for travellers who have already seen Western Europe and want to understand the eastern half — the part of the continent that most Western travellers have barely begun to explore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Romania to Albania – Transylvania & Beyond

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is fictional, but the historical figure who inspired it — Vlad III Drăculea (Vlad the Impaler) — was a real 15th-century Wallachian prince. Bran Castle is associated with Vlad primarily through proximity and regional tradition rather than documented historical occupation. It is, however, a genuinely magnificent 14th-century fortress in a dramatic setting, and Inside Balkan’s guide will explain the full historical and literary context.
The tour crosses at the Qafë Thanë border crossing between Struga (North Macedonia) and Pogradec (Albania) on the southern shores of Lake Ohrid. This is a well-maintained border crossing that takes approximately 30–45 minutes. Inside Balkan’s guide manages all border paperwork and the process is smooth for holders of most Western passports.
