Montenegro & Albania – Adriatic to Alps

📅 10 Days / 9 Nights 👥 Max 12 🎂 Ages 18-70 📍 Podgorica / Shkodër 🏔 Moderate 💰 From €1290 per person

Montenegro and northern Albania share a border, a mountain range, and a geographic drama that is unlike anything else in Europe. On one side: the Adriatic coast, UNESCO bays, medieval walled cities, and the Budva Riviera. On the other: the Accursed Mountains, fjord-like reservoirs, and traditional villages where the old highland way of life still persists. This 10-day Inside Balkan tour crosses between these two worlds, offering a journey from the Adriatic Sea to the Albanian Alps that covers an extraordinary range of scenery and culture.

The tour opens in Montenegro — a country with a remarkable density of beauty packed into 13,812 square kilometres. The Bay of Kotor, enclosed by mountains and dotted with medieval churches, is one of the most photographed landscapes in the Mediterranean. Durmitor National Park, with its glacial Black Lake and Europe’s deepest river canyon, is an entirely different kind of beauty. Montenegro is a small country that punches far above its weight in terms of natural drama.

Crossing into Albania, the Koman–Fierza ferry transforms the journey into something genuinely extraordinary: a two-hour passage through a drowned river gorge whose scale and colour is difficult to believe until you are on the water. From Fierza, the route moves into the Albanian Alps — Valbona Valley and Theth — where the final days of the tour offer mountain hiking and authentic highland hospitality.

Inside Balkan’s team covers both countries natively. Our Montenegrin partnerships ensure excellent local access on the northern half of the route, while our Albanian expertise makes the alpine section of the journey as deep and authentic as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Montenegro & Albania – Adriatic to Alps

Yes. Tivat airport is actually closer to Kotor and most travellers find it more convenient for this tour. Inside Balkan can arrange a pickup from Tivat Airport on Day 1. Let the team know your arrival airport when booking.
Tara River rafting is offered as an optional activity on Day 5 (Durmitor full day). It is one of the great rafting experiences in Europe — through the deepest river gorge on the continent — and Inside Balkan strongly recommends it for travellers who are comfortable on water. It costs approximately €40–60 extra per person, payable locally.
The Theth–Valbona crossing (Day 8) involves approximately 6–7 hours of hiking with 700m elevation gain. It is rated moderate to challenging. Good fitness and sturdy footwear are essential. The trail is well-marked and Inside Balkan’s guide sets a pace appropriate to the group. If weather conditions make the pass unsafe, the guide will use the vehicle road alternative.
Sveti Stefan is one of the most iconic images of Montenegro — a fortified medieval village on a small island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The island was converted into an exclusive resort in the 1960s and is now operated by the Aman group. Inside Balkan takes guests to the viewpoint above Sveti Stefan for photographs and then to the public beach immediately adjacent to the causeway, which is freely accessible.
The Koman–Fierza ferry is one of the most extraordinary travel experiences in Europe. The journey takes approximately two hours through a reservoir that fills a gorge of fjord-like proportions — walls of grey and green limestone rising hundreds of metres above the water on both sides. The boat is a simple local ferry, not a tourist vessel, which adds to the authenticity. Eagles and hawks are commonly seen. The colour of the water in morning light is extraordinary.
