Bosnia & Albania – Faith and Mountains

📅 10 Days / 9 Nights 👥 Max 12 🎂 Ages 18-70 📍 Sarajevo / Tirana 🏔 Moderate 💰 From €1380 per person

Bosnia and Albania are connected by more than geography. Both countries were shaped profoundly by Ottoman rule. Both have significant Muslim populations living alongside Orthodox Christian and Catholic communities. Both have experienced the 20th century’s most extreme political experiments — Yugoslavia’s particular form of socialism in Bosnia, Enver Hoxha’s paranoid communism in Albania. And both contain mountain landscapes of extraordinary wild beauty. This 10-day Inside Balkan tour travels between them, finding the connections that the history books rarely make.

The journey begins in Sarajevo — one of Europe’s most historically layered and emotionally resonant cities. The 1914 assassination that triggered the First World War happened here. The four-year siege of the 1990s that killed 14,000 people happened here. And the extraordinary cultural pluralism that allowed Sarajevo to be simultaneously Muslim, Orthodox, Catholic, and Jewish for centuries of its history happened here too. A full day with an Inside Balkan guide in Sarajevo — including both the Srebrenica memorial and the Ottoman Baščaršija bazaar — is an experience that changes how you see the world.

From Sarajevo, the tour moves through Herzegovina to Montenegro and across into Albania, ascending to the Albanian Alps for three days of mountain hiking in the Valbona and Theth valleys. The contrast between the urban complexity of Sarajevo and the primeval silence of the Albanian Alps is one of the most powerful travel experiences in the Balkans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Bosnia & Albania – Faith and Mountains

Inside Balkan includes the Srebrenica–Potočari Memorial on this tour because we believe that understanding what happened there in July 1995 is essential for understanding the modern Balkans. The visit is done with the utmost respect: a knowledgeable guide provides historical context, the memorial and cemetery are approached quietly, and time is given for personal reflection. Many guests describe it as the most important and affecting thing they do in the Balkans.
Blagaj Tekke is a 16th-century Dervish monastery built into the base of a 200-metre cliff at the source of the Buna river, near Mostar. The spring erupts from the cliff with extraordinary force, producing 43 cubic metres of water per second from a completely unknown source underground. The monastery, perched above the spring, is one of the most atmospherically extraordinary sites in Bosnia. Inside Balkan considers it one of the hidden gems of the entire Balkan region.
