For millions of Albanians and their descendants living in the United States, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and elsewhere, Albania is simultaneously a deeply intimate and deeply unfamiliar place. The stories come down through families: the mountains, the food, the music, the hospitality, the fierce pride in identity. But the place itself — its current form, its actual geography, the villages where grandparents grew up — is often unknown.
Inside Balkan’s Albanian Family Heritage Tour was designed for this community: second and third-generation Albanian diaspora who want to make the journey back, to see the country their family came from, to walk in the landscape that shaped the people who shaped them. It is not a standard tour with a fixed itinerary. It is a framework that Inside Balkan’s team customises around each guest’s specific family background, regional heritage, and personal goals.
The tour includes archival research assistance — accessing records in Tirana’s National Archive and in regional archives in Gjirokastër, Shkodër, and elsewhere. It includes visits to ancestral villages with introductions to community elders. It includes oral history sessions where living memory of the communist era, the pre-communist village life, and the experience of emigration can be accessed through conversation rather than books. And it includes the general Albania experience — the food, the landscape, the Byzantine and Ottoman history — that provides the context within which the personal heritage sits.
